Contextual Targeting

What is Contextual Targeting?

Unlike property-based targeting (using user data) or event-based targeting (based on user actions), contextual targeting allows you to target ads based on specific pages or sections within your app.

Each page or surface is assigned a contextId, and ads can be shown only within selected contextIds.

Example: In a community app with multiple categories like music, law, psychology, supplements, or pets, you can deliver relevant ads only to users browsing those specific categories. For example, show music-related ads only on the music page, and law-related ads only on the law page.

Use contextual targeting when ad relevance depends on where users are, not just who they are.

Getting Started with Contextual Targeting

  1. To begin, go to Console Navigation > Targeting > Contextual Targeting, then click Create Contextual Targeting.

  2. Once created, add categories to define where your ads will be shown.

  3. Use Category Filters to set conditions for each context.

  4. You can choose from two filter types:

  • Exact match: Targets only pages with a contextId that matches exactly.

  • Match one of: Targets pages with any of the listed contextIds.

  1. After setting conditions, click Save to finalize your targeting category. The targeting will now be ready for sale.

Selling Contextual Targeting

Once your targeting category is ready, click 'Start Selling' to activate it.

Only active (on sale) categories will appear in the advertiser’s campaign settings.

If you skip this step, advertisers won’t be able to select your targeting option—so don’t forget to hit Start Selling!

How to Sell Contextual Targeting in Ad Products

  1. Go to the Ad Products menu in the left navigation.

  2. Select the ad product where you want to apply contextual targeting, then click the 'Edit button.'
